Regional Australia network gets better with nbn® Fixed Wireless

If you are living in regional or remote areas of Australia, it’s understandable that you may feel disconnected from the digital world at times! In the past, internet access hasn’t been the best with the lack of reliability and access to higher speeds. Thanks to recent investment in nbn®s Fixed Wireless network, an additional 120,000 homes in regional and remote Aussie homes will now have access to nbn® Fixed Wireless internet, and faster speeds will available across the network.

In this blog, we’ll cover what upgrades have been made and what this means for your internet experience.

Each customer will have a small antenna installed outside of their home in direct line of sight to the fixed wireless tower. This setup allows for greater consistency in the speed and quality of service delivered to each premise. There are different types of antennas that support various speed plans.

Diverse antenna options and speed upgrades

What you need to know about the upgrades to the nbn® Fixed Wireless network

With the recent $750 million investment in the network ($480 million from the Australian Government and $270 from NBN), nbn® is looking to improve the reach and speed capability by the end of 2024. This means connecting approximately 120,000 homes to the nbn® Fixed Wireless network that were previously connected via nbn® satellite. Doing this means these homes will have access to future-proof technology that evolves to meet the increasing demands, ensuring regional communities are not left behind as technology advances.

Key improvements include:

  • For Existing Fixed Wireless services

    • Increased speed on existing plans: The Fixed Wireless Plus plan now boosts speeds from 75Mbps/10Mbps to 100Mbps/20Mbps.
    • Equipment upgrades: Offering free equipment upgrades for customers with a WNTD version 1 or 2 for better network performance.
    • Introduction of new high-speed plans: For places with newer nbn® Wireless Network Terminating Devices (WNTD versions 3 and 4), busy time speeds have increased from around 60-70 Mbps to about 80-90 Mbps and peak speeds are now reaching 100 Mbps and above.
  • For Services Flipped From Satellite to Fixed Wireless

    • Greater reach: The range of nbn® Fixed Wireless has expanded from 14km to 29km, extending high-speed internet to an added 120,000 homes.
