Leaptel Prepares for nbn®‘s 2Gbps Launch This September

September is geared up to be an exciting month for Aussies on the nbn® network! Hyperfast, nbn’s new 2Gbps speed tier, will be released alongside speed increases across nbn’s existing 100Mbps, 250Mbps and 1Gbps plans. With download speeds of up to 2000Mbps, this is one of the biggest leaps in residential internet performance EVER! We’ve been busy behind the scenes making sure you’ll be ready to take full advantage of these upgrades as soon as these new plans launch on September 14.

Real-World Testing Shows Promising Results

Some of our lucky team members were among the first in Australia to trial the new Hyperfast plans and have experienced the new speeds firsthand. In one test, we saw speeds hit 2100Mbps down and 190Mbps up. That’s a download speed over twenty times faster than the average fixed-line speed in Australia.

But our testing isn’t just about top speeds—it’s about understanding what it takes to help every customer get the most out of their new lightning-fast 2Gbps connection.

What we found:

  • Wired beats wireless. Especially with a 2.5Gbps ethernet port. Plugging a supported device directly into the router gave us full speed.
  • Wi-Fi 7 makes a real difference. In homes using a Wi-Fi 7 router and compatible devices, wireless speeds came much closer to the 2Gbps mark.
  • Device limitations will impact performance. For example, despite using a Wi-Fi 7 router, an iPhone 15 Pro (which doesn’t support Wi-Fi 7) couldn’t hit top speeds over wireless, despite the 2Gbps connection in the home.

These insights help our team to better support customers at launch on September 14th. So should you ever get stuck, know that our fully Australian-based support team will be more than happy to assist you.

What You Need to Know to Get Ready

If you’re considering upgrading to the new Hyperfast plan, here’s what you need to know:

For Fibre (FTTP) Customers:

  • nbn® will replace your existing NTD (network termination device) with a new model—either a 1-port or 4-port version.
  • The new device is installed in your existing bracket, making the upgrade smooth and simple.

For HFC Customers:

  • A new NTD will be provided with a 2.5Gb Ethernet port to support the new speed tier.

For Everyone:

  • Your router matters: To get the best performance, we strongly recommend a Wi-Fi 7-capable router.
  • Your devices matter too: Only newer devices with 2.5Gb Ethernet or Wi-Fi 7 support will be able to take full advantage of these speeds.

Still Stuck on a Copper Connection?

The new 2Gbps speed tier, and upgrades to existing high-speed nbn® plans are only available to those on the FTTP and HFC network. To ensure you don’t miss out on these new lightning-fast speeds on September 14, check your address via the link below to see if you’re eligible for a free upgrade to a full nbn® fibre connection (FTTP).

A full fibre connection not only future proofs your home by allowing for much higher internet speeds, but it will also provide a far more reliable service.

Gearing up for some serious speed

To support the reliable delivery of 2Gbps speeds, we’re upgrading the capacity across our 50 busiest Points of Interconnect (known as POIs)—the key locations where your internet traffic enters our network. These upgrades give us the bandwidth needed to ensure a fast, consistent, and reliable experience for our customers on these new high-speed plans. This is an exciting time, and we’re just getting started!
