Making the LEAP into the fibre Fastlane

The National Broadband Network (nbn) has been a transformative force, providing Aussie homes with much faster broadband. Original connections to the nbn network were copper wires, better known as Fibre to the Node (FTTN) and Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), where a copper wire connected the house to the internet through a phone line that is connected to a fibre cable in a nearby node or curb.

With the demand for better, faster and more reliable internet performance, the nbn is upgrading its entire nationwide copper network with a progressive rollout of upgrading homes to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP). This program is called Fibre Connect, and here at Leaptel, we support this incredible program!

How does Fibre Connect work?
Every month, nbn makes more homes eligible for the free upgrade to nbn fibre. If you’ve seen an ad telling you that your upgrade is coming soon or it’s available now, or you’ve checked your address on the website and been told it’s not ready yet, that’s because the rollout is progressive.

How will I know when it’s my turn for the fibre upgrade?
nbn will inform you via direct mail to let you know when it’s your turn to upgrade. Alternatively, you can visit their website and check your address to see when you will be eligible, or better still, check your address via our website!

What’s so great about fibre?
Fibre optic technology, often hailed as the gold standard in internet infrastructure, is renowned for its speed, reliability, and scalability. Unlike traditional copper networks, fibre optic cables transmit data using light, resulting in lightning-fast speeds and virtually no signal degradation over long distances. With nbn’s commitment to upgrading existing connections to fibre at no extra cost, the benefits for consumers and businesses alike are undeniable.

Read one of our previous blog posts that explains why this incredible free upgrade really is worth it!

Fibre speed
One of the primary advantages of being connected to fibre is speed. With internet usage becoming increasingly bandwidth-intensive, from streaming high-definition content to conducting video calls and gaming online, the need for faster internet has never been more apparent. Fibre optic connections offer speeds of up to 1000 megabits per second (Mbps), surpassing the capabilities of older technologies and ensuring seamless browsing, streaming, and downloading experiences for users.
nbn has also just begun consulting with internet providers about offering speeds of up to 2Gbps (2000Mbps) sometime next year.

Fibre reliability
Fibre optic networks are inherently more reliable than their copper counterparts. Traditional copper cables are susceptible to interference from external factors such as inclement weather, electromagnetic interference, and signal degradation over long distances. Fibre optic cables, on the other hand, are impervious to such issues, providing a stable and consistent internet connection regardless of external conditions.

Fibre flexibility
Another great reason to upgrade to fibre is its scalability. As our reliance on the internet continues to grow, so too does the demand for higher bandwidth applications and services. Fibre optic networks have the capacity to meet these evolving needs, offering virtually unlimited bandwidth for both residential and commercial users. Whether you’re a small business looking to expand your online presence or a household with multiple devices connected simultaneously, fibre optic technology can accommodate your growing connectivity requirements with ease.

nbn’s free upgrade to fibre represents a significant step forward in Australia’s journey towards a fully connected future. With its unrivalled speed, reliability, and scalability, fibre optic technology promises to revolutionise the way we live, work, and interact in the digital age. Whether you’re a homeowner, entrepreneur, or simply someone who values staying connected, the benefits of upgrading to fibre are clear.
